Machine control is becoming increasingly popular with major contruction contractors. These systems, when fitted to dozers, graders, excavators and scrapers radically reduce setting out costs and can dramatically increase machine and operator efficiency. Smaller earthmoving contractors without the technical resources can also benefit from these systems by allowing us to manage their systems for them. Design data can be extracted from virtually any format and converted into a digital terrain model, giving a computer representation of how the ground will be formed once work is complete. Added to this we can construct models to represent the temporary earthworks reflecting the actual construction process. The resulting models can be fed into the machine control systems directly from site office, ensuring that the machine drivers and foremen know of any design changes as and when they occur. While the machine is working, position and blade/bucket data may be logged. From this data we can then prepare as built drawings and measure the quantities of materials removed or imported.
